Passed away December 3, 2011 at the age of 82 after a lengthy battle with cancer.

 

Beloved husband of 43 years to Triena (Van Luven) and of 15 years to the late Hélène (Gibeault). Cherished father of Joanne (Toronto), Dan (Amherstburg), Kristina and husband Larry Deck (Montreal). Loving grandfather of Helaina, Jenna, Dane and Nathan.

 

Predeceased by his parents Gustave and Claire Huneault and brother Fernand.

 

Survived by sisters Connie and Pauline Huneault. Dear son-in-law of the late Albert and Edna Van Luven and brother-in-law of Edward Van Luven. He will be fondly remembered by his nephews Alain and Benoît.

 

Bert graduated from high school with the highest marks in the province of Quebec. From 1947-49 he was a Radio Operator/Technician in Labrador, including over one year as Officer-in-Charge at the radio-weather station, Knob Lake Airport (Canadian Pacific Air Lines and Hollinger Ungava Transport Ltd.) From 1950-54, he was the Service Manager of Eplett's Television and Appliances. In March 1954 he purchased the service department and continued to operate it as Eplett's Service Depot until June of 1962 when he became employed by the Windsor Board of Education as a teacher in charge of instruction of radio and television service technicians. He taught at the Western Ontario Institute of Technology (WOIT) and at W.D. Lowe.

 

Bert spent the last 26 years of his career teaching electronics in the Manpower Retraining Program at St. Clair College. He served two terms as President, Windsor District, Radio Electronic Technicians Association (RETA) and sat on its provincial Board of Directors.

 

He was a member of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada and was President of the local chapter for two terms. In addition, he was a member of the American Meteorological Society and a Lifetime Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. He used to have a column on astronomy in the Windsor Star and he wrote many articles for Electronic Technician Magazine (New York), Radio Electronics Magazine (New York) and Monitoring Times Magazine. He also proofread for CANAV books.

 

Most of all Bert enjoyed life and liked to make people laugh with his corny jokes. The family wishes to acknowledge the outstanding care Bert received at the Cancer Centre. He was impressed by the way the volunteers and staff went out of their way to welcome and support him. In particular we thank Dr. Caroline Hamm, Dr. Gordon Giddings, Carole Manor, Roy Costa and Usan his dietician.

 

We also extend our heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Jack Spiers at Hotel Dieu Grace Hospital who was instrumental in reducing Bert's back pain. While he was at home, his CCAC Case Manager, Roxanne Bownlie, provided excellent advice and support and he was blessed with loving, compassionate care by Nurse JoAnne Cedar from St. Elizabeth Health Care. We also thank Hospice, his Personal Support Workers and all of the other health providers who came into our home. Finally, we are grateful to staff at Windsor Regional Hospital, Complex Continuing Care Unit for the professional care they gave Bert in his final days. Special thanks to the Head Nurse Sherri Larose-Rossi, Social Worker Pat Lescinsky, Sandi Mosco and Brittany Desjardins.

 

Donations made to the Windsor Regional Cancer Centre would be appreciated by the family.

 

Cremation services have taken place. Memorial visitation Wednesday from 3-5 & 7-9 p.m. with parish prayers at 4:30 p.m. and a eulogy and Bert's favourite music at 8 p.m., at Families First 1065 Lauzon Rd. East Windsor 519-969-5841. On Thursday, family and friends are invited to St. John Vianney Church (385 Dieppe Street) after 9 a.m. until time of Mass at 10 a.m. Interment following at St. Alphonsus cemetery.
