James (Jim) E. Kitchin

 

Former Radio Operator in the Artic. Jim received his 1st Class Radio Certificate # 2211 in Alert Bay on July 7, 1930. Became a Radio Inspector in Vancouver. Retired from DOT on March 22, 1963 at the age of 80. Author of The Radio Amateur Licensing Handbook.

Ancien opérateur radio dans l'Arctique. Jim a obtenu son certificat de radio de première classe n° 2211 à Alert Bay le 7 juillet 1930. Il est devenu inspecteur radio à Vancouver. Il a pris sa retraite du ministère des Transports le 22 mars 1963 à l'âge de 80 ans. Auteur du Manuel des licences de radioamateur.

James E. Kitchin, - an old-timer in radio, slightly junior to Gugliemo Marconi, retired as regional superintendent of radio regulations at Vancouver on March 22, 1963.

 

All members of the regional radio regulations office, and several members from field offices and other section of the department gathered to honor him. He received gifts - including a stereophonic record player and best wished from all.

 

Other paying tribute to Mr. Kitchin's many years of service and to his contributions to the growth of communications in B.C. were amateur radio clubs, representatives from the radio industry, dealers, the B.C. Telephone Company and the municipality of Greater Vancouver.

 

Writing in 1981 to a friend, Jim was saying that all eight editions remaining of his Radio Amateur Handbook were gone, ...

 

<< some even purchased by several foreign governments which makes me wonder if they may have had idea about amending their amateur regulations !

 

Being now 80 years old, I have retired after 60 years of radio which, I think, is enough for anybody.

 

I have been trying to get somebody capable and willing to take on the Handbook but without success. >>

Jim E. Kitchin was an operator at Alert Bay in 1929 and later on in his career became a Radio Inspector in Vancouver.  He wrote a manual in the late 1950s to help budding amateur radio operators acquire their licenses. He received his 1st Class Radio Certificate #2211 in Alert Bay on July 7, 1930.
