Just found the obituary for Gerry Smith. Gerry was on Sable Island from the Spring 1955 to perhaps August 1956. I believe Leo Irvine was the other RO.

It is with profound sadness that the family of Gerry Smith announce his death on March 7, 2013 at the age of 89 years.

Gerry is survived by his loving wife, Liane, and his children Helen (Dr. Richard) Moon, Daniel (Cathy) Smith, Paula (Terence) Hopwood, Bobby (Elizabeth) Smith, and Mary Louise (John) Millar and their children and grandchildren (14 grandchildren and 1 great grandson and a great granddaughter to be born in May)

The children of Liane, Steve and Judy Kiar, Ron and Lisee Kiar, and Lynda Scrivens and their children are cherished to the memory of Gerry. Gerry was predeceased by his first wife, Jeanne Marie (Butts) in 1981.

Gerry contributed to the Canadian war effort as a radio operator during World War Two. As a career civil servant of 47 years with the federal government, Gerry worked primarily in Ottawa but spent the earlier years of his career working  in such remote areas as Resolution Island, Baffin Island and Sable Island.

Gerry was an avid sports enthusiast and was active in the Ottawa community as a youth hockey, baseball and football coach and was one of the founders of the West Ottawa Minor Hockey Association. Most of all, Gerry was the biggest fan of his children and their accomplishments. Gerry played many sports and was proud of his status as the oldest tennis playing member at the Ottawa Athletic Club where he played tennis with Liane and his buddies. He also loved to ride his bike on the many NCC pathways and enjoyed watching parliamentary debates live in the House Commons. Gerry and Liane travelled extensively in their retirement and enjoyed many wonderful years together.

He was known as Grampa Gerry or Big Grampa and he loved to laugh.

He was a gentle giant. Many thanks to the ICU staff of the Ottawa Civic Hospital.

Funeral Monday, March 11, 2013 at St. Theresa’s Church for Mass of Christian Funeral at 10:30a.m.  Private family interment to follow.  In lieu of flowers in memoriam donations to the Ottawa Hospital Foundation - Civic Campus ICU appreciated.
