From 2002 personal correspondence with Art Solomon
I retired from Industry Canada,
January, 1996 and I seem to recall that you were going to leave shortly
afterwards. I can't believe it's been six years already and that I'm heading
for the 60th birthday this year. I have to say that, other than missing a some
of the people I worked with over the years, I really haven't missed some of the
nonsense we used to have to endure and the past six years have been pretty
interesting.
I've been to China (a couple of times), Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Pakistan
and a few other Asian or South Asian countries on projects, and then spent some
time in other parts of the world such as the Bahamas. I'm now working on two
projects with the Cyprus government - just returned from 21 days on site and am
heading back on February 16th for another couple of weeks. Interesting times,
but I try to do these in the fall and winter months and then spend the summer
golfing (or what passes for it because I don't seem to be improving - at least
that's Gerry Brushett's opinion) and sitting around the pool with the amber
liquid to fend off dehydration.
Sometimes the project timing isn't right and I end up working a bit in the
summer, for instance the Cyprus project ends around the end of June, but I've
been lucky and have done the work in the cold months most times.

Here is a picture of Glen Ritchie and Art Solomon in the Royal Canadian Navy in
1966 when they took their Radioman Special
Training Course. Glen Ritchie is second from left in the back row. Art
Solomon is first from left in the middle row. As
Radiomen Special (a.k.a. Comm Research), most of Glen and Art's work
involved the monitoring of Russian radio traffic and intelligence gathering at
stations in Alert, Inuvik, Bermuda and other places around the world. They were
experts in copying Russian morse code.
I was also a Radioman in the Royal Canadian
Navy but not a Radioman Special like Glen
and Art. I was a Radioman without the
special designation, also known as a Radio Sparker.
My main job was Naval Radio Operations onboard ships and submarines and at shore
Naval Radio Stations, handling ship-to-shore, shore-to-ship, ship-to-ship and
ship-to-aircraft radio
traffic... Donald Courcy, Webmaster
