I just found the above photo that
Ronald sent me for the website almost 6 years ago. I received it around the
time I was retiring so I guess it fell through the cracks, Ronald was a
291er in the Regular Forces, just like some of the other DOC/IC Alumni such
as Art Solomon and
Glen Ritchie. The main job of a Comm
Research 291 was to "monitor Soviet radio traffic and intelligence
gathering" from places such as Alert, Inuvik and Bermuda. I am guessing that
Bermuda was a good posting after spending some time in Alert. They were very
good at copying Russian morse code.
As for me, I was a 251er also known as a
Radioman Sea 251 (a.k.a. Radio Sparker). Our main job was to work as Radio
Operators and Radio Technicians at naval coast stations and onboard ships
and submarines. Before the unification of the Forces in 1969, in the old
Navy, my trade was called Radioman and Ronald's trade was called
Radioman Special.
